What Is a Third Party Claim in Car Insurance?
A third party claim is compensation sought by a person who suffers injury, death, or property damage because of someone else's vehicle. This is different to an own-damage claim, which is when you claim for damage to your own car. The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 requires that all registered vehicles in India must have third party car insurance so that victims have a guaranteed source of compensation, irrespective of the personal financial capacity of the at-fault driver.
Introduction
The Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 mandates that every car owner in India have a third party car insurance. It's the most basic vehicle insurance policy you can own. If you accidentally damage third-party property or cause injury in an accident, the policy will cover it.
